What is Bike the Basin?
The BIKE THE BASIN event is the idea of three Norhtampton Township, Bucks County siblings, Michael, Mitchell and Karissa Smedley. The Smedley kids love to ride their bikes in their neighborhood, local parks, and especially on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk! They decided to use their enthusiasm for one of their favorite activities to create an opportunity for hundreds of kids to support an incredible cause.
Michael (14) and Mitchell (10) are affected by a rare blindness called Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis (LCA). LCA is the most severe form of Retinitis Pigmentosa. While Michael and Mitchell are incredibly active members of their community, they both wish to have the necessary vision to fulfill their dreams, dreams like pitching for a baseball team, being a soccer goalie, and driving a car someday. The gene responsible for their blindness is CRB1. CRB1 is the second highest incidence of LCA, and affect thousands worldwide with Retinitis Pigmentosa, but research has been slow to focus on it. The Smedley family and others have worked to change that focus. They started the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation with other families affected by the same blindness gene. The CRBF supports research projects that will find a cure for degenerative retinal diseases, specifically focusing right now on the CRB1 gene.
BIKE THE BASIN is an opportunity for families in this community to come together to support the Smedley boys and all the other kids affected by the CRB1 gene mutation of retinal disease. Kids often wonder what they can do to help others… this event is a perfect answer!
WHAT EXACTLY IS BIKE THE BASIN?
BIKE THE BASIN is a fundraiser and a FUNraiser! Families and volunteers spend the months and weeks leading up to BIKE THE BASIN fundraising for their Family Team or Volunteer Group. Based on how much they raise, families and volunteers can achieve ALL STAR CLUB ($150), MVP CLUB ($500), or HALL OF FAME CLUB ($1000) status. Ultimately, the family that raises the most money wins the BASINATOR trophy and the volunteer group that raises the most wins the BIKE-A-NATOR trophy!
On the day of BIKE THE BASIN, all families and volunteers gather at the Northampton Civic Center Basin. While waiting for the main event, kids get to ride through a challenge course, get their face painted, get a balloon animal, dance with the live entertainment, and more!!!!
The main event is the age group ride around the nearly 1/2 mile basin track! Kids ride their bikes with their friends and tons of volunteers line the track to cheer them on and make sure they ride safely. While the kids ride, parents have an opportunity to “shop” in the silent auction and raffle basket area!
At BIKE THE BASIN, kids of all ages are the stars of the show! Whether they are riding bikes or helping run the event, it’s the kids working and riding together with their families cheering them on that make the day so special.
